We start with the perfect tree and make it even better. Montanafied wood siding is thermally modified using only heat and steam created from its own pressure, no chemicals, no preservatives. Every board comes from Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certified forests. What is Thermal Modification?

Thermal modification is a natural, chemical free process that permanently improves the performance of regular wood using only extreme heat and steam created from its own pressure.

How It’s Made

The process takes place in a specialized kiln and lasts 24–72 hours. It follows three precise phases:

1. Drying – The wood is slowly heated to remove nearly all moisture, bringing it down to near zero equilibrium moisture content.
2. High Heat Modification – Temperatures reach 180–230°C (356–446°F) in a low oxygen or oxygen free environment. This controlled pyrolysis like reaction breaks down sugars and compounds that attract decay.
3. Cooling & Reconditioning – The wood is cooled while steam is introduced, locking in its new stability.

The high heat alters the wood’s cellular structure: it breaks down hemicelluloses (the sugars that feed mold, fungi, and insects), partially modifies lignin and cellulose, and reduces the wood’s ability to absorb water. Essentially, it caramelizes the natural sugars. The finished product is far more hydrophobic (water repelling) and dimensionally stable than untreated wood.
