What is Montanafied Spruce?
We take the finest Montana grown spruce and transform it into beautiful, high performance 1×6 and 1×8 T&G.
Montana Spruce is naturally tough. It thrives in our extreme climate, sub-zero winters, scorching summers above 100°F, and everything in between. Our short growing season produces some of the densest and stable timber in the U.S., with an outstanding 25+ growth rings per inch.
We start with the perfect tree and make it even better. Montanafied wood siding is thermally modified using only heat and steam created from its own pressure, no chemicals, no preservatives. The result is siding known for exceptional dimensional stability, superior durability, and true sustainability.
Every board comes from Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certified forests. It requires no surface treatments or coatings, making it an ecological choice from harvest through its entire life cycle. Left unfinished, it weathers gracefully to a beautiful silver patina. Prefer to keep the rich brown tones? We can recommend eco-friendly, low VOC finishes.
Whatever your project, Montanafied siding delivers mountain luxury and peace of mind, right here in Montana.
What is Thermal Modification?
Thermal modification is a natural, chemical free process that permanently improves the performance of regular wood using only extreme heat and steam created from its own pressure.
How It’s Made
The process takes place in a specialized kiln and lasts 24–72 hours. It follows three precise phases:
- Drying – The wood is slowly heated to remove nearly all moisture, bringing it down to near zero equilibrium moisture content.
- High Heat Modification – Temperatures reach 180–230°C (356–446°F) in a low oxygen or oxygen free environment. This controlled pyrolysis like reaction breaks down sugars and compounds that attract decay.
- Cooling & Reconditioning – The wood is cooled while steam is introduced, locking in its new stability.
The high heat alters the wood’s cellular structure: it breaks down hemicelluloses (the sugars that feed mold, fungi, and insects), partially modifies lignin and cellulose, and reduces the wood’s ability to absorb water. Essentially, it caramelizes the natural sugars. The finished product is far more hydrophobic (water repelling) and dimensionally stable than untreated wood.
Key Benefits
- Superior Durability & Decay Resistance The sugars and nutrients that feed mold, rot, fungi, and insects are eliminated or altered, giving the wood Class 1 durability, far more resistant to biological attack than untreated lumber.
- Exceptional Dimensional Stability Absorbs 40–60% less moisture, so it swells, shrinks, warps, or twists dramatically less (often 50–70% reduction in movement) even through Montana’s freeze thaw cycles and humidity swings.
- Rich, Consistent Color The entire board turns a deep, uniform chocolate brown, resembling premium tropical hardwoods or cedar. Over time outdoors, it naturally weathers to a striking silver gray patina.
- Truly Eco-Friendly 100% chemical free. A sustainable upgrade over pressure treated lumber that enhances fast growing unstable species. Sourced exclusively from SFI certified Montana forests.
- Additional Advantages Improved thermal and sound insulation, reduced resin bleed, and excellent performance in humid or high moisture environments such as saunas, soffits, and exterior cladding.
Overall, Montanafied thermally modified wood siding is the local choice for architects, builders, and homeowners who want long lasting, low maintenance, and environmentally responsible siding. It performs beautifully in Montana’s challenging climate; cold winters, hot summers, and big swings in humidity, while delivering the natural beauty and mountain character you expect from real wood.

DISCLAIMER:
Owner and installer responsibilities
Wood is a natural material that possesses certain unique characteristics. Sustainable Lumber Co. manufactures in accordance with the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship. Standard trade practice allows up to 5% margin of error for natural imperfections and manufacturing defects.
The following requirements are the responsibility of the owner, even if the owner is absent at the time of installation:
- Prior to installation, the installer and owner should conduct a final inspection of grade, color, manufacturing, and finish quality of boards to ensure that the product conforms to the purchased product.
- During installation, the installer should not use boards that raise doubts about the grade, color, manufacturing quality or finish. Sustainable Lumber Co. will replace only defective boards, not exceeding the 5% margin of error allowed by industry standards.
- Sustainable Lumber Co. shall in no case be liable of installer’s lack of judgment or poor quality of installation.
- Once installed, all boards are considered as having been accepted by the installer and owner, even if owner is absent at time of installation.
Exclusions due to certain inherent properties of wood
Wood expands and contracts according to variations in humidity. Even if the product is properly installed, narrow gaps and slight distortions can occur. Moreover, exposure to light alters the color of all wood species. Areas covered with area pictures, wall coverings, mirror’s, etc. and any other light blocking objects will result in color variations.
