What is Montanafied™ Spruce Siding?

Montana Grown. Montana Made. Montana Tough.

At Sustainable Lumber Company, we believe the best wood for Montana homes comes from right here in Montana. That’s why we’re proud to launch Montanafied Spruce. A premium thermally modified wood siding and soffits made from locally harvested Montana spruce and processed right here in our state.

While many thermally modified wood products on the market are sourced and shipped from Europe, Africa, New Zealand, Chile, Canada, or the Southeast United States, we chose a different path. By keeping the entire supply chain in Montana; from our forest, to our facility, to your jobsite.  We deliver a better value, a smaller carbon footprint, and real support for our local economy and forests.

Currently available in 1×6 and 1×8 T&G smooth and wire brushed texture. Class A fire rating available and prefinished stain colors coming soon. Call or email us for more information and pricing, info @ sustainablelumberco.com or (406) 642-7120

The Hidden Cost of Imported Wood

Imported wood siding might look similar on the shelf, but the miles add up. Shipping wood across oceans or thousands of miles across the country increases transportation emissions, shipping costs, and takes dollars out of Montana economy. Best of all, there are no tariffs in Montana! Every container load from overseas means higher fuel use and costs, more carbon in the atmosphere, the cost of tariffs, and less support for our local loggers, truck drivers, and mill workers who call Montana home.

Most people don’t understand how many times the wood changes hands before reaching the end user. In most scenarios (not all), lumber is made by the producer, sold to an importer, sold to a wholesaler, sold to a distributor, sold to retailer, sold to a contractor, and then finally sold to the end user. Every time it changes hands, there is a mark up, resulting in a 100+%  mark up by the time it reaches it’s final destination.

In contrast, Montanafied Spruce travels only a short distance from nearby SFI-certified forests to our local facility and then straight to your job site. That short supply chain means lower costs for you and a dramatically smaller environmental impact.

What is Montanafied Spruce?

We start with the finest Montana grown spruce, a species strengthened by our extreme climate. Sub-zero winters, summers above 100°F, and a short growing season produce exceptionally dense wood, averaging 25+ growth rings per inch.

Using only heat and steam (no chemicals), we thermally modify this local spruce in Montana. The result is beautiful, high performance siding that offers:

  • Exceptional dimensional stability – it resists warping, cupping, shrinking, and swelling even through Montana’s freeze thaw cycles.
  • Superior durability and rot resistance – Water resistant, insect resistant, and Class A fire rated.
  • A rich, uniform chocolate brown color that weathers gracefully to a striking silver patina (or can be finished with eco-friendly low-VOC coatings).
  • True sustainability – harvested from Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certified forests, processed chemical free, and low carbon footprint.

Three Powerful Reasons to Choose Local

  1. Lower Pricing – No ocean freight. No long haul trucking freight from distant ports. No tariffs in Montana. By sourcing and modifying locally, we keep our costs down and pass the savings to you. Montanafied Spruce is a premium product at a price that beats all imported alternatives.
  2. Smaller Carbon Footprint – Local wood dramatically cuts transportation emissions compared to overseas imports. Plus, Montana spruce sequesters carbon as it grows and continues storing it in your walls for decades. Choosing Montanafied Spruce means you’re reducing your project’s overall environmental impact while supporting forests that are actively fighting changes in the climate.
  3. Supporting Montana Communities and Forests – Every board of Montanafied Spruce helps sustain local jobs, from the loggers and foresters who manage our SFI-certified lands to the skilled workers who run our facility. In a time when Montana’s timber industry faces extreme challenges, buying local keeps money circulating in our rural economies and encourages responsible forest management. Healthy, working forests stay working forests, providing wildlife habitat, clean water, recreation, and future timber for generations to come.

Built for Montana, by Montanans

Montanafied Spruce isn’t just another siding option, it’s a product designed by and for Montana. It stands up to our harsh weather, looks beautiful on modern, rustic, and traditional homes, and gives you peace of mind knowing you’re supporting the very community you live in.

Whether you’re a homeowner planning a remodel, a contractor building new construction, and architect designing a mountain modern home, or a builder who values true sustainability, Montanafied Spruce delivers mountain luxury with local integrity.
