Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS ENGINEERED FLOORING?

Engineered floors, like our rustic Hickory engineered hardwood flooring, consist of multiple wood sheets bonded together. This cross-ply construction arranges the layers in opposing directions to enhance stability, effectively protecting against moisture issues. The unique arrangement allows the planks to expand and contract in such a way that limits cupping and crowning when exposed to varying humidity levels. Thanks to their versatile design, engineered floors can be installed anywhere in the home—from basements to directly on concrete slabs. They can be stapled, glued, nailed, or even floated over an existing subfloor.

WHAT ARE LIVE-SAWN PLANKS?

Live-sawing, the historic method of sawing a log straight through its diameter, is used to create our Hickory wood floors. This method produces unique grain variations and displays a high level of natural characteristics throughout each plank. Not only does live-sawing yield aesthetically rich results, but it is also the most efficient cutting method, resulting in significantly less waste compared to other techniques.

The hardness of Hickory makes it highly resistant to marring. Boasting a Janka rating of 1820, Hickory is considered the second hardest flooring species in the country. Our rustic Hickory hardwood flooring showcases unique grain patterns, natural mineral streaks, sound knots, and beautiful color variations within each plank. We meticulously epoxy-fill all voids, mill tongue & grooves on all four sides, and grade it to our 99% usable specifications, and pre-finish with a no VOC UV-cured Aluminum Oxide matte finish.

HOW THICK IS THE WEAR LAYER?

WHAT IS ALUMINUM OXIDE FINISH?

When it comes to choosing your hardwood flooring durability and long-lasting beauty are undoubtedly at the top of your list. One finish that stands out for its exceptional qualities is an aluminum oxide finish. Renowned for its strength and resilience, an aluminum oxide finish in hardwood flooring offers a range of benefits that make it the preferred choice for homeowners, designers, and architects. That’s why our Rustic Hickory Flooring is finished with aluminum oxide.
Unmatched Durability and Scratch Resistance: One of the standout features of an aluminum oxide finish is its unrivaled durability. This type of finish incorporates aluminum oxide, which is one of the hardest substances known to man. When applied to hardwood flooring, it forms an incredibly tough and protective layer that shields the wood from scratches, scuffs, and general wear and tear. This is particularly advantageous in high-traffic areas or households with pets and children, as the floor is less susceptible to damage and maintains its pristine appearance for a prolonged period.
Preservation of Beauty and Color: Natural sunlight can gradually fade the color and luster of hardwood floors over time. To combat this, aluminum oxide finishes often include UV inhibitors. These inhibitors act as a shield against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, preserving the original color and beauty of the wood. By choosing an aluminum oxide finish, you can enjoy the rich tones and natural warmth of your hardwood flooring for years to come.
Easy Maintenance: Keeping your hardwood floors clean and well-maintained is essential for their longevity and aesthetic appeal. Thankfully, an aluminum oxide finish simplifies the maintenance process. Due to its exceptional durability, this finish is highly resistant to stains, spills, and daily wear. Regular sweeping, vacuuming, and cleaning can be performed without fear of damaging or compromising the finish. With an aluminum oxide finish, you can enjoy beautiful hardwood floors without the need for constant refinishing or extensive upkeep.
Longevity and Cost Effectiveness: Investing in hardwood flooring is a long-term commitment, and you want to ensure that your investment stands the test of time. An aluminum oxide finish provides unparalleled longevity, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a durable and cost-effective solution. With its remarkable scratch resistance and wear tolerance, this finish significantly reduces the need for refinishing or replacement. By choosing an aluminum oxide finish, you can enjoy the beauty and functionality of your hardwood floors for many years, saving both time and money in the long run.
Enhanced Aesthetics: Aside from its exceptional protective properties, an aluminum oxide finish adds a touch of elegance to your hardwood floors. It provides a subtle sheen that enhances the natural beauty and depth of the wood. Whether your design preference leans toward a modern or traditional aesthetic, an aluminum oxide finish complements various interior styles, adding sophistication and charm to any space.
Improved Indoor Air Quality: Maintaining a healthy indoor environment is a top priority for any homeowner. Aluminum oxide finishes are generally hypoallergenic and do not promote the growth of mold, bacteria, or other allergens. This feature contributes to better indoor air quality, particularly beneficial for individuals with allergies or respiratory sensitivities. By choosing an aluminum oxide finish, you can enjoy beautiful hardwood floors without compromising your family’s well-being.
