Should I install hardwood flooring in my bathroom, laundry room, and entryway?
Installing hardwood flooring in moisture prone or high traffic areas like bathrooms, laundry rooms, and entryways can be a mixed bag, it’s undeniably attractive and adds a premium feel to a home, but it comes with risks and maintenance demands that often make alternatives more practical. We’ll break down our thoughts by area, drawing from our expertise homeowner experiences. In general, solid hardwood is the most vulnerable, while engineered hardwood (layered construction) offers better resistance to humidity and warping, making it a slightly safer bet in these spots if you’re set on wood.
Bathrooms
Hardwood can work in low moisture bathrooms like powder rooms or half baths where there’s no shower or tub, providing a cozy, seamless look that ties into the rest of the house. The warmth underfoot is a big plus over cold tile or laminate flooring, and it can last 25+ years with proper care. However, in full bathrooms, it’s often a poor choice due to constant humidity from showers, spills, and potential flooding, which can cause warping, cupping, mold, and finish degradation. Acidic cleaners or body products can also stain it permanently. The National Wood Flooring Association advises against it in high moisture baths for these reasons. If you insist, opt for engineered hardwood, ensure excellent ventilation (e.g., exhaust fans), use non slip mats, and reapply protective top coats as needed, test by dropping water; if it beads, you’re good. Overall, we recommend skipping it unless it’s a guest bath; tile or waterproof vinyl is far more forgiving and won’t lead to costly repairs.
Laundry Rooms
The aesthetic appeal is strong here, hardwood keeps the space looking polished and integrated with adjacent rooms, and it’s easy to sweep clean of lint or spills, potentially boosting home value. That said, leaks from washing machines or dryers are a major threat, leading to swelling, staining, or mold, especially if water sits unnoticed. Vibrations during cycles can also amplify noise on hardwood, making it annoyingly loud compared to softer options. Humidity from drying clothes adds to the risk. Engineered hardwood handles this better than solid hardwood flooring, but even pros often steer clients away unless you add rubber mats under appliances and commit to quick cleanups. Our take: It’s doable with precautions, but tile or vinyl plank is smarter for a utility space.
Entryways

In Summary
While hardwood elevates the vibe everywhere, it’s high maintenance in these areas and could lead to regrets if water incidents happen. Consult a flooring pro in your area to assess your specific setup, and consider engineered versions or hybrids for better odds. Always be sure to acclimate your wood flooring before installation. If budget allows, mixing materials (e.g., hardwood in halls transitioning to tile in wet zones) often gives the best of both worlds.
