Corral Board

Reclaimed corral boardsA common use for our rough sawn Douglas Fir is corral boards and other applications on farms and ranches. Douglas Fir has the strongest strength to weight ratio of any wood in the world. Therefore it is very popular in ranching and farming communities. Our rough sawn Douglas Fir boards are available in 1×4 through 2×12 and just like the “good’ol” days we cut them to a “true” dimension. For instance if you purchase our 2×8 rough sawn Douglas Fir, you get a full 2″ thick and and a full 8″ wide. Not many people understand that if you purchase a 2×8 in your local retail yard you are actually getting a board that is 1 1/2″ thick and 7 1/4″ wide, but you’re actually paying for a full 2″ thick and full 8″ wide board. The term used for this is “actual'” size versus “nominal” size. Yeah, doesn’t make since to meeither.

I’d like to know when and how this got changed in our lumber history. We are actually one of the only countries in the world that sells wood on a nominal count versus an actual count. Not many people know this either, but that’s why it has historically been difficult for the U.S. to export lumber products. Most of the world buys on the “actual count” not the “nominal count”. An easy way to think about this is; if you are purchasing on a nominal count, you are actually purchasing air! If you purchase a full sawn rough 2×8 versus a nominal 2×8 the cost is typically higher, but only because you are not purchasing air.
